Pizza: Now 1 of your 5 a day

America's at it again. This time, the government is trying to pass a bill that will reclassify the deliciously unhealthy food, pizza, as a vegetable. I read about this in many articles around the web from various news sites, the most informed and interesting was from The Daily Mail, http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2062056/Pizza-vegetable--covered-tomato-paste.html?ITO=1490. Their Excuse for this is that the food is coated in a tomato sauce, therefore counting the food as a vegetable, in the same way that putting a spoiler on your honda civic makes it a ferrari. The real reasons for doing this seem to be that the government can then cut its cost on fresh, healthy foods for schools around the country, as school meals in America must include a certain quantity of vegetables, this will create a loophole. Fantastic America.

The request for this change has came from, surprise surprise, the food companies that produce frozen pizzas for schools. The change would severely increase their profits with most schools in America opting for this cheap way of feeding their students. Congress has said that the federal government should not be telling children what they can eat, especially if it's an unhealthy option.

There are people in government over there that are sensible enough to see that this is a terrible idea, and can see it coming back at them in terms of their countries health, but if it's going to save america money in the short term, then I can see it happening. The people supporting the effort to classify pizza as a government say that they would aim for pizzas to be made in a healthier way, with whole grain crusts and lower sodium levels. Even with this promise, most people still agree that this is a "national disgrace".

The House and The Senate are expected to vote on the bill later on this week, President Barack Obama will handle the rest.
